The History of the Hyacinth

The hyacinth originally comes from the Mediterranean region and the Middle East. In Greek mythology, the flower sprang from the blood of the young Hyacinthus, who was loved by the god Apollo. You can grow hyacinths in special hyacinth glasses with just water. Place the bulb just above the water surface – it should not sit in the water – and keep it in a dark, cool place for 8–12 weeks until roots and a shoot have developed. Then move it into the light and watch it flower indoors. This is a beautiful and exciting alternative to traditional pot planting.

How to Care for Hyacinths Indoors

Buy hyacinths in bud for the longest flowering period.
Water sparingly – the bulb rots easily with too much water. Let the soil dry out slightly between waterings.
Place the pot in a cool, bright location (10–16 °C is ideal) – warmth speeds up flowering but shortens it considerably.
Avoid draughts.
