Dahlia – symbolism, varieties and care

The dahlia (Dahlia) is autumn's undisputed queen. The flower heads can grow up to 30 centimetres large, and no other flower genus can match the spectrum of colours and shapes that the dahlia offers. This has made it one of the most sought-after flowers on the market.

The dahlia's history

The dahlia originates from Mexico and Central America, where the Aztecs cultivated it both as a food crop (the root is edible) and for ceremonial purposes. The Spanish brought the tubers to Europe in the 1780s. The flower is named after the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl, which gives Scandinavia a certain claim to calling the dahlia somewhat its own. Mexico has designated the dahlia as its national flower.

Frequently asked questions about dahlias

What soil type is best for dahlias?
Dahlias thrive best in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Add compost and fertiliser when planting. A sunny and sheltered location is ideal – dahlias need at least 6 hours of sunlight daily for abundant flowering.
How to prune dahlias for more flowers?
Pinch out side shoots early to direct energy to the main flower. Deadhead regularly – this promotes new blooms. Cut down to ground level in autumn and lift the tubers before winter if you live in cold climates.
What pests and diseases affect dahlias?
The most common pests are aphids, thrips and slugs – especially in damp weather. Fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and grey mould can occur in high humidity and poor air circulation. Space plants adequately and avoid watering the foliage.
