History and origin

The sunflower originally comes from North America, where indigenous peoples cultivated it over 3,000 years ago – not only as an ornamental plant, but also for seeds, oil and dyes. The Spanish brought the sunflower to Europe in the 16th century, and from there it spread to the rest of the world. Today, the sunflower is Ukraine's national symbol and the fifth most cultivated crop globally, thanks to sunflower oil.
