White Zinnia: The Elegant Summer Flower

White Zinnia is one of the most elegant and timeless summer flowers you can grow in your garden. With its Latin name Zinnia elegans, this flower truly lives up to its name through its elegant appearance and pure white colour that brightens any flower bed.

Origin and Characteristics of White Zinnia

Zinnia elegans originally comes from Mexico and has been cultivated as a garden plant since the 1700s. The white variety of zinnia is particularly valued for its ability to complement other colours in the garden and create harmonious planting schemes. The flower can grow between 30-90 centimetres tall depending on the variety, and the white blooms can vary in size from small pompoms to large, full flower heads.

Planting and Soil Requirements

White zinnia thrives best in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with a pH value between 6.0 and 7.5. The plant loves sunshine and needs at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to flower at its best. The soil should be moist but not wet, as zinnia is sensitive to overwatering, which can lead to rot.

Sow seeds directly into the soil once the risk of frost has passed, usually at the end of May or beginning of June. You can also sow indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost to achieve earlier flowering. Space plants 15-30 centimetres apart to give them sufficient room to develop.

Summer Care

During summer, white zinnia requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. Water at the root to avoid wetting the leaves, which can promote fungal diseases. A weekly liquid feed helps the plant produce more flowers throughout the season.

Deadheading and Flowering

To encourage continuous flowering, it is important to regularly remove faded flowers. This is called deadheading and encourages the plant to produce new flowers rather than setting seed. Pinch off the faded blooms just above the next leaf or bud pair.

White Zinnia as a Cut Flower

White zinnias are excellent as cut flowers and stay fresh in a vase for up to a week. Cut the flowers early in the morning when the stems are full of water, and choose blooms that have just fully opened.

Overwintering and Seed Collection

Zinnia elegans is an annual plant that does not survive winter outdoors. You can, however, collect seeds from the most beautiful flowers at the end of the season. Allow some flowers to ripen fully on the plant until they turn brown and dry, then harvest the seeds and store them in a cool, dry place until next year.
