Pink Delphinium: A Garden Classic
Pink Delphinium, known by its Latin name Delphinium, is one of the garden's most impressive perennial flowers. With its tall, stately flower spikes and beautiful pink shades, this flower creates a dramatic effect in flower beds and mixed borders. Delphinium has been a beloved garden flower for generations and continues to fascinate both beginners and experienced gardening enthusiasts.
Characteristics of Delphinium
Delphinium is characterised by its distinctive spurred flowers densely packed along tall stems. The pink varieties range from light pastel tones to deeper, more intense pink shades. The flower spikes can reach impressive heights and create a vertical dimension in the garden that few other plants can match. The deeply divided leaves have a beautiful green colour that perfectly complements the flowers' beauty.
Planting and Position
For best results, delphinium should be planted in a sunny to partially shaded spot with good air circulation. The plant thrives best in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil that is kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. A position sheltered from strong winds is preferable, as the tall flower spikes can be sensitive to wind damage. Delphinium works wonderfully as a background plant in borders where it can create height and structure.
Growing Season Care
During the growing period, delphinium requires regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water at the base to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal diseases. Regular feeding with a balanced plant fertiliser promotes both growth and flowering. As the flower spikes grow tall, they may need support with stakes or other supports.
Flowering and Aftercare
Pink delphinium typically flowers in early summer and can produce a second flush of flowers later in the season if deadheaded correctly. After the first flowering, cut the flower spikes down to approximately 15 centimetres above ground level. This stimulates the plant to produce new shoots that can flower again in late summer. Regular removal of spent flowers also extends the flowering period.
Overwintering and Perennial Care
As a perennial, delphinium overwinters in the soil, but requires some care to survive winter well. In autumn, cut down the above-ground parts when they begin to fade. A layer of mulch around the plant helps protect the roots from frost. Delphinium can be divided every three to four years to maintain vigour and produce new plants.
Combinations with Other Plants
Pink delphinium works beautifully with other perennials such as roses, delphiniums in other colours, and lower-growing summer flowers. It creates lovely contrasts against plants with silver-grey or dark green foliage and complements other pastel-coloured flowers in a harmonious way.
