White clematis. Beautiful in a bouquet, as a gift or when you want to impress without any fuss.

White Clematis: The Garden's Most Elegant Climber

White clematis is one of the garden's most elegant climbing plants, enchanting with its pure, white flowers. This magnificent plant belongs to the Clematis genus and offers timeless beauty that suits both classical and modern garden designs.

Beautiful White Flowers That Light Up the Garden

The white clematis impresses with its large, star-shaped flowers that vary in size depending on the variety. The flowers typically have six to eight petals with distinctive stamens in the centre, creating a striking contrast against the white. Flowering usually stretches from early summer to late summer, and some varieties can even flower twice per season.

Ideal Climbing Plant for Vertical Surfaces

White clematis is an excellent climbing plant that can reach several metres in height. It climbs by twining its leaf stalks around supports such as trellises, fences, pergolas or other plants. This makes it perfect for creating height and structure in the garden, whilst softening hard surfaces with its graceful flowers.

Planting and Soil Requirements

For best results, plant white clematis in nutrient-rich, well-draining soil with good humus content. The plant thrives best with its roots in shade and the top in sun or partial shade. An important tip is to plant deeply – approximately 5-10 centimetres deeper than the plant was in the pot. This promotes the development of new shoots from the roots.

Watering and Feeding

Regular watering is important, especially during dry periods. The soil should be kept evenly moist but not waterlogged. During the growing season, feed the plant monthly with a balanced garden fertiliser. Mulching around the roots helps retain moisture and keep the roots cool.

Pruning for Optimal Flowering

Pruning white clematis varies depending on which pruning group the variety belongs to. Many white varieties flower on the previous year's wood and need only light pruning after flowering. Other varieties flower on the current year's growth and can be pruned harder in spring. Always check variety-specific advice for your particular clematis.

Overwintering and Protection

Most white clematis varieties are hardy in Norwegian climates, but young plants may need extra protection in their first winter. Cover the root area with leaves or bark to protect against frost. In cold areas, it may be good to wrap tender varieties with horticultural fleece.

Combinations with Other Plants

White clematis works excellently with roses, particularly red or pink varieties, which create a beautiful colour contrast. It can also be combined with other climbing plants or used as a backdrop to perennial borders where the white colour enhances the colours of other flowers.
