Elder Flower: A Versatile and Beautiful Garden Plant

Elder, known by its Latin name Sambucus nigra, is one of our most beloved and versatile shrubs. This robust plant has been part of the British flora for centuries and offers both aesthetic beauty and practical uses.

Distinctive Features of Elder

Elder is characterised by its large, creamy-white flower clusters that appear in late spring. The flowers form flat, lacy umbels that can reach up to 20 centimetres in diameter. The shrub develops into a vigorous plant that can reach 3-6 metres in height and similar width when mature.

The leaves are compound, consisting of 5-7 lance-shaped leaflets with a matt green colour. The bark on older branches develops a distinctive greyish-brown hue with deep fissures, giving the shrub a rustic and natural appearance.

Flowering and Fruit Production

Flowering typically occurs from May to July, depending on climatic conditions and location. The fragrant flowers attract many pollinating insects, making elder a valuable plant for garden biodiversity.

After flowering, small, dark purple to black berries develop and ripen during late summer and early autumn. These berries are not only decorative but also edible when properly ripened and prepared.

Planting and Location

Elder thrives best in a sunny to partially shaded position with nutrient-rich, moist yet well-drained soil. The shrub is adaptable and can grow in various soil types, but prefers a slightly alkaline to neutral pH level.

When planting, allow the shrub plenty of space as it can grow quite large. Plant preferably in spring or early autumn when the soil is moist and temperatures are mild.

Care and Maintenance

Elder is an easy-care shrub requiring minimal maintenance once established. Regular watering during dry spells helps the plant develop optimally, especially during the first few years after planting.

Pruning can be carried out after flowering or during the dormant season. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches to maintain an open and airy structure.

Garden Uses

Elder works excellently as a specimen shrub, in hedges or as part of a natural garden setting. It is particularly well-suited to cottage gardens and wild gardens where it has room to develop freely.

The shrub can also be used to create natural screens or as background planting for shorter plants. The white flowers create beautiful contrasts against darker foliage from other plants.
