Classic Begonia
Classic begonia is one of our most beloved summer flowers, brightening flower beds and containers alike with its rich colours and abundant blooms. This charming plant has been a garden favourite for generations and continues to be a popular choice for both beginners and experienced gardeners.
A versatile flower for every location
Begonias thrive excellently in both sun and partial shade, making them a flexible choice for different areas of the garden. The classic varieties bloom continuously from early summer until the first frost and require minimal care to deliver maximum colour display. The flowers come in a broad palette of colours from pure white and soft pink tones to deep reds and orange shades.
Planting and soil requirements
For best results, plant classic begonias in well-draining soil that is rich in nutrients. The soil should be moist but not waterlogged, as begonias are sensitive to standing water which can cause root rot. A mixture of compost and ordinary garden soil provides optimal conditions for growth and flowering.
Watering and feeding
Regular but moderate watering is the key to success with begonias. Water preferably in the morning and avoid getting water on the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. During the active growing season, the plant benefits from regular feeding with a balanced flowering fertiliser that promotes continuous blooming.
Seasonal care
Classic begonia is relatively low-maintenance but appreciates having spent flowers removed regularly. This stimulates the formation of new buds and keeps the plant looking neat. Also check regularly for signs of pests such as aphids or thrips, which can be treated with environmentally friendly plant protection products if needed.
Overwintering and storage
As a tender plant, begonia cannot tolerate frost and must be brought indoors or treated as an annual. Tuberous begonias can be dug up after the first frost and stored dry and cool over winter for replanting the following year. This method makes it possible to preserve favourite varieties year after year.
Combinations and uses
Classic begonia works excellently both as a standalone plant and in combinations with other summer flowers. It complements beautifully plants such as pelargoniums, petunias and lobelia in colourful arrangements. In shady spots, it can be combined with foliage plants to create interesting contrasts and textures.
