White ranunculus (Ranunculus asiaticus) is one of the most elegant and refined flowers you can grow in your garden. With its papery petals in layer upon layer, this beautiful bloom creates a romantic and timeless feel wherever it is planted.
Origin and Characteristics
Ranunculus originally comes from the eastern Mediterranean region and Asia Minor, but has become a beloved garden plant throughout the world. The white variety of Ranunculus asiaticus stands out with its pure white, tightly packed petals that form an almost perfectly round flower. Each bloom can have up to 100 petals, which gives them their characteristic full appearance.
Planting and Soil Requirements
White ranunculus thrives best in well-draining soil with good drainage. The soil should be nutrient-rich and ideally have a pH value between 6.0 and 7.0. Before planting, it is important to soak the tubers in lukewarm water for a few hours to wake them from dormancy. Plant the tubers with the claws facing downwards at approximately 5 centimetres depth with 10-15 centimetres spacing between each tuber.
Care During the Growing Season
During the growing period, ranunculus requires regular but moderate watering. The soil should be kept lightly moist but never waterlogged, as this can lead to rot damage on the tubers. Feed the plant by adding compost or a balanced fertiliser several times during the season.
Flowering and Deadheading
White ranunculus typically flowers from late spring through to midsummer, depending on when it was planted. To prolong flowering, regularly remove faded blooms. This encourages the plant to produce new buds and keeps flowering going for longer.
Overwintering and Storage
In colder climates, ranunculus tubers must be lifted in autumn after the foliage has died back. Allow the tubers to dry in an airy spot for a few weeks before storing them in dry sand or peat in a cool, frost-free place over winter. In warmer areas, the tubers can be left in the ground with a protective layer of leaves or bark.
Use in the Garden
White ranunculus is perfect for flower beds, pots and as a cut flower. The white colour pairs beautifully with other pastel-coloured flowers and creates a harmonious and peaceful feel in the garden. The blooms also last well in a vase, which makes them a popular choice for bouquets and arrangements.
