White Daisy: A Classic Garden Flower

White daisy, with the Latin name Argyranthemum frutescens, is one of our most beloved and classic garden flowers. This charming plant has delighted gardening enthusiasts for generations with its simple yet elegant white petals and yellow centres that resemble tiny suns.

Origin and Characteristics

The white daisy originally comes from the Canary Islands but has long since become a firm favourite in British gardens. The plant belongs to the daisy family and is characterised by its abundant white flowers that bloom from early summer until the first frost. The leaves are deeply divided and have a beautiful grey-green colour that perfectly complements the white flowers.

Planting and Placement

White daisy thrives best in a sunny to semi-shaded spot with well-drained soil. The plant is relatively undemanding regarding soil type but prefers a slightly chalky environment. When planting, it's important to choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight daily for optimal flowering. The plant can be grown in flower beds, pots and window boxes, making it very versatile.

Care During the Growing Season

During the active growing season, daisy requires regular watering, especially during dry periods. It's important to water at the root and avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. Regular deadheading of faded flowers promotes continuous flowering and keeps the plant neat and well-maintained.

Feeding and Nutrition

To maintain abundant flowering, daisy needs regular feeding. A balanced liquid fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season produces excellent results. Avoid over-feeding with nitrogen as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowers.

Overwintering and Propagation

In the British climate, white daisy is usually treated as an annual, but it can overwinter indoors in a bright, cool location. The plant propagates easily from cuttings taken in late summer. Cuttings root quickly in moist soil and can subsequently overwinter as small plants.

Common Problems and Solutions

Daisy is generally a robust plant but can occasionally be affected by aphids or spider mites, particularly during warm, dry periods. Regular inspection and early treatment with organic plant protection products give the best results. Good air circulation around the plant helps prevent fungal diseases.

Garden Combinations

White daisy works excellently as a companion to many other plants. It harmonises beautifully with blue and purple flowers such as lavender and delphinium, and creates a classic combination alongside roses. In container arrangements, it can be combined with trailing plants for a full and attractive display.
