Classic Lobelia
Classic Lobelia is one of our most treasured summer flowers, enchanting with its intensely blue, delicate blooms. This charming plant has become a favourite amongst gardening enthusiasts thanks to its abundant flowering and versatile uses.
Origin and Characteristics
Lobelia erinus originally hails from southern Africa but has long since established itself as a classic in British gardens. The plant forms dense mats of small, oval leaves and produces countless tiny flowers in the most fantastic shade of blue. Flowering continues from early summer until the first frost, making it a reliable splash of colour throughout the season.
Uses in the Garden
This versatile plant thrives beautifully in both pots and flower beds. In hanging baskets, it creates lovely cascades of blue flowers that fall elegantly over the edge. As a border plant in flower beds, it forms the perfect blue frame around other summer flowers. Many gardeners use lobelia as a complement to white and pink flowers to create harmonious colour combinations.
Planting and Position
Classic Lobelia prefers a sunny to semi-shaded position where it receives morning sun but is protected from the strongest midday rays. The soil should be nutrient-rich and well-draining but also moisture-retentive. Plant out after the risk of frost has passed, usually in late May or early June.
Care During the Growing Season
Regular watering is essential for lobelia's wellbeing, especially during warm periods. The plant is sensitive to drying out and can quickly show signs of stress if the soil becomes too dry. Feeding with liquid fertiliser every fortnight keeps flowering abundant and colours vibrant.
Tips for Extended Flowering
To encourage continuous blooming, lightly trim the plant back if it begins to look tired mid-summer. This stimulates new growth and a second flush of flowers. Also remove faded flowers regularly to keep the plant neat and flowering actively.
Combinations with Other Plants
Classic Lobelia works beautifully alongside white alyssum, pink petunias or yellow tagetes. The blue colour creates lovely contrasts and enhances other flowers' colours in an elegant way. In larger arrangements, it can be used as a background plant to taller summer flowers.
Overwintering and Renewal
As an annual plant, classic Lobelia does not survive winter outdoors. Many gardeners choose to collect seeds in autumn for sowing the following year, or simply purchase new plants each season to ensure the best quality and flowering.
